GYC U12 MANAGER'S REPORT 2006.
This is the report and awards presentation for the U 12 squad on behalf of Alan Daughtrey ( coach ) and myself for the season which all started on a very
hot day at Thornbury CC with a game against Devon and was a year to see some ‘firsts’. The weather on this day was to prove the standard for the year with
only our penultimate game at Worcestershire seeing any rain.
Our results were played 12, we won 6 with one narrow losing draw.
The summer saw a further 6 training sessions (followed by lunch), which helped with team bonding, certainly brought out the character in the players and
was a huge success. It also meant parents could get to know the coaches as well as each other and I am sure they will agree that Sunday mornings will never
be quite the same.
We would like to say a big thank you to the parents for their support of the boys and the respect shown to the coaches. You gave us the support we needed
and when we needed it. In the absence of county appointed scorers this year, a big thank you to the army of parent scorers who organised themselves
magnificently to do the book. Alan and I agree that we had two brilliant teams with us this year, the boys and the parents. Again our thanks.
We decided to accept an invitation to the Taunton mini festival for the first time at this age group. Regrettably only 13 were allowed to attend and we
felt for those who were left out. We will seriously consider the festival for next year.
Memorable performances are numerous :-
Tom Allcoat – 40 v Devon, 39 v Wales, 56 v Dorset, 44 v Cornwall,
47 v Berkshire, 48 v Worcestershire and 63 v Cornwall.
Jake Flower – 49 v Cornwall.
Niall Wellington – 67 v Berks, 4 for 17 v Here and 5 for 20 v Cornwall.
Robbie Shurmer – 44 v Wales ( match winning ).
Tom Atkinson – 73 v St Stithians of South Africa.
Tom Harris – 42 v Herefordshire.
Will Golding – 5 for 22 v Cornwall.
Oliver Thornley – 4 for 18 v Hampshire.
Joe Brimble – 4 for 14 v Dorset
You will have heard Cornwall mentioned several times in those highlights. The last game of the season provided us with what we set out to achieve, as it
all came to fruition. Good bowling, 6 catches, players throwing themselves around to stop the ball, superb backing up and then we came to bat, chasing 150
to win. Tom Allcoat and Jake Flower in a 130 run opening chanceless partnership which was as mature and controlled as you would want to see, to silence the
noisy home side. The first century partnership in my time as manager and the first time I have seen opposition parents leaving way before the game has
finished, in such numbers.
I would like to say 2 thank you’s. Firstly to my tireless coach, as I put a huge demand his way this year but he rose to the challenge and produced the
goods. Secondly to Bob ‘scoreboard’ Smith for putting all the results etc on the website.
Alan and I would like to wish all the squad the very best for the future and hope they will look back on this season as the year that got them up and
running.
Our batsman of the year.
There can really be no doubt as to the batsman of the year. Mentioned before for his performances he has his own style of batting, more from Kevin
Pieterson’s coaching manual than Andy Stovold’s, however he accumulates runs consistently at the top of the order with six scores of 40 or more including
two half centuries, a total of 387 runs at an average of 32.25, our batsman of the year is Tom Allcoat.
Our bowler of the year.
Our bowler of the year is a young man who we believe could go from strength to strength, injury permitting and a few less cakes at tea perhaps. Keen and
certainly committed with an ever improving action. Top of the bowling averages with season figures of 36 overs 11 for 120 average 10.9, economy rate 3.33.
Our bowler of the year is Will Golding.
Our all rounder of the year.
There are two contenders for this award. Firstly Tom Allcoat for his batting performances already mentioned, along with his role as captain which we
consider he did admirably, second top catcher with 5, responsible for 4 run outs ( of the opposition that is ) and for his impressions of Uri Geller !!
The second is a young man who took most wickets with 15 at an average of 19.13, scored 163 runs with an average of 20.38, top catcher with 6. Our all
rounder of the year is Niall Wellington.
As stated, this year saw some ‘firsts’ for me as manager of the U12s. We managed to hit a stationery helmet not once but twice, the hundred run partnership,
and there were also firsts in taking 5 wkts in a match. I would like the two individuals to collect a momento which is the actual ball that they achieved
that feat, with 6 overs 5 for 22 v Cornwall Will Golding and 8 overs 5 for 20 also v Cornwall Niall Wellington.
